The Solar Archetype: The Center of the Psyche
In astrology, the Sun is not simply a celestial body. It is the symbol of who we are in our essential nature. Jung described the Sun as one of humanity’s oldest symbols of the Self — the archetypal center of the psyche around which everything else revolves. If the Moon is the unconscious, the Sun is what we are capable of knowing about ourselves; the illuminated portion of our being.
Solar energy is vitality, joy, and the capacity to express ourselves openly. It is what makes us recognizable to others and to ourselves. The Sun in the psyche is the voice that says “I am” without justification or apology.
The Solar Archetype in Tarot
Strength (card 11) carries solar energy in its most personal form. This is not the strength of armies or hierarchies — it is the strength of tamed instinct. The woman on the card holds the lion’s mouth open effortlessly — she acts from inner authority, not from fear. Jungians see here an image of the ego that has built a healthy relationship with its darker, untamed parts. The Sun here is dignity that requires no demonstration.
The Sun (card 19) is the solar archetype in its most direct expression. A child rides a white horse beneath an enormous radiant light. This is an image of the psyche having reached genuine individuation: when the inner light no longer needs protection and can pour outward freely. In Jungian terms, this is the state after integrating the shadow — when joy is possible not because there are no difficulties, but because they have been met and accepted.
The Shadow of the Sun
Every archetype has its shadow, and the solar is no exception. Ego inflation occurs when solar energy becomes excessive: the person begins to identify with the Sun and demands that the entire psyche revolve around them. The need for constant recognition, the inability to tolerate criticism, blinding others with one’s light — these are shadow solar dynamics.
Jung warned that an ego which identifies with the Self loses touch with reality. The Sun must shine — but not scorch. Recognizing the shadow side of the solar archetype is the path to being genuinely bright without needing others to dim in our presence.
